A Couple of Bags

I totally, I mean totally, espouse this idea of bringing our own bags with us when we go to the store. And since, more often than not despite my wishes to the contrary, my shopping is of the bag-here, bag-there variety rather than one big fell swoop, I'm learning to keep some bags in my car and take one in with me when I stop at Trader Joe's or -- gasp -- Whole Foods on my way home from work.

What I don't like is the type of re-usable bag that we get from both of those places. So it seemed like the thing to do was to make some stylish bags for me and a couple of buddies.

This picture is of the weekend's yield -- two from my William Morris stash. One has already been given away to my house guest who I really never thought of as a bag lady. Until now.

I guess I would be able to spot you (or your buddies) out shopping by the very stylish bags... they're WONDERFUL! Well done, you!
I bought a dozen heavy canvas bags on ebay and to fancy them up I put orphan quilt blocks on them - makes them interesting and pretty - and I get a lot of comments on them at the stores. When I make my list the first item is CLOTH BAGS so that when I get out of the car and look at my list then it helps me remember. If I go into a store without my bag/bags I either carry the stuff out without a bag or make myself go back to the car before I check out, it is is a lot of stuff. It is starting to sink in to automatically pick up the bags when I get out of the car. The other night we stopped at our daughter's house for a few minutes and I reached for a bag before I realized I didn't need one just to visit. LOL

I have two bags I purchased from the grocery store for $1 each, one I made out of denim, and two string bags. The bag I made has holes that go over the bag stand at the store, but without them, the bag is so soft that it is hard for the bagger to fill. The string bags hold a lot, but are problematic as well, but they are nice to throw into the other bags, so I always have enough bags. But I will say, that the dollar bags from the store are strong, and stand up well, so they are easier to fill.

Now that I'm used to keeping them on the passenger seat of the car, I usually remember to take them into the store. The biggest plus is that they hold so much and are much, much easier to carry into the house.

What boggles my mind is seeing patterns for $$$$$ and/or classes for $$$$$ being offered for people (quilters) to make their own bags. That just doesn't make economic or green sense.

Gives a whole different meaning to being a "bag lady"...and it is a GOOD meaning! Way to go, I love the bags!
Love those bags..much nicer than the appalling varieties they supply!!
Can't wait to see the little girl's clothes made up, great stuff you have found!
Pleased you liked the cards.
We are holding the state Lutheran Women's convention this weekend, do you have those types of groups still within your Church?
Got a good idea for a devotion for 150 Lutheran ladies on God's amazing grace?..I'm hoping one will come to me as I sleep...

I guess a lot of us are becoming bag ladies - although with a William Morris bag - you will be on the upper end of the fashion ladder!

I keep several canvas bags in the car and bring them everywhere now. I find it actually is easier because I'm not hauling several bags when I'm shopping - the canvas bags hold a lot more. I have made a couple of smaller bags for the drug store and places like that as well.
