COW* Talk Time

Well, it's that time again.  Time to clear out some crankiness.  There are just a few things irritating the heck out of me these days.

Let's start with Pearle Vision.  When I was in Richmond, the frame of my glasses broke.  Sidepiece just snapped.  Didn't think they could be put back together, but put them away and bought a pair of drugstore glasses to tide me over.  On my return, I took them back to where I'd bought them in February of 2009.  Turns out the warranty was for one year.  One year for a frame that cost $160.  For the frames alone.  The clerk most affably extended the warranty and it turns out that the warranty is good for half the cost of the defective goods.  So I picked out new frames of a more traditional type that won't snap and forked over my $80.  Pearle will cover the replacement lenses and the other half of the frame.  But still.  I think this is just outrageous.

Not outrageous, but annoying is the phenomenon of some bloggers now including advertisements on their blogs.  It's not enough that we visit their blogs?  That we admire their quilts?  That we link them on our blogs? That we buy the books they have written?  Is that not enough?  Apparently not.  Now we have to see ads for Werther's candy and other random stuff when we go to see what kind of quilt the blogger has in the works.  Slows down the loading of the page, too.  Sheesh.  I mean, really!

Have saved the worst for last, and I'm dead serious about this one [you should pardon the pun].  Someone whom I've just "unfriended" on Facebook posted this as her status:

Sharlene likes DEAR LORD, THIS YEAR YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE ACTOR, PATRICK SWAYZIE. YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE ACTRESS, FARAH FAWCETT. YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE SINGER, MICHAEL JACKSON. I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW, MY FAVORITE PRESIDENT IS BARACK OBAMA. AMEN.

This person is advocating prayers that the President of the United States will die.  Sorry, friends, but I cannot take this lightly even if it was meant as some sort of a terrible "joke," spelling errors aside.  The past year and a half have brought about an enormous decrease in civility in our country and I wonder where, when, and how it will stop.  And just for the record, Sharlene is not an angry twelve-year-old.  She's a woman in her early sixties who, last I knew, was a teacher in a Catholic school!

Okay.  Feeling some relief at having gotten these complaints off my chest.  Back to Business As Usual.

Hi Nancy,

I agree with you about the ads. My other pet peeve is that when using a reader Like Google Reader, some people have set up their blogs so that you have to click through to read the entire blog. What's up with that?

And whether you like someone or whether you disagree with them, it is hateful and disrespectful at the least, to wish them dead.

You and I think alike... I "unfriended" a fellow quilter on Facebook last week just for that reason. I'm hoping she asks my why.

I love using a reader, so I don't have to look at the ads. I DO NOT click thru to the blog if the setting is that way, I delete the subscription instead. I have SO many blogs I want to read, and so little time!

Oh look, I'm MOOOOOing, I'm a regular *COW* speaker..*sigh*.

LOLOL...and the word verification below? nanni hahahaha

Nancy - rest assured you will never have to suffer ads on my blog - it's all my techno-deficient/phobic mind can do to insert photos and links to other websites/blogs - I'm too useless to even add a header or a side bar (or that could be lazy) so if you ever need an advert free zone come on over to another 'grumpy old cow' and I'll pop the kettle on :o)
I couldn't agree more about the advertisements! I am also dropping "friends" and blogs whenever I see something totally meanspirited. I certainly do not mind when someone disagrees with me politically. What bothers me is the lack of civility in our country.

When you unfriend someone on FB, are they notified?

As to your peeves, I don't blame you one bit.

Where I go for my glasses, the new frames are warrantied for a year. But I don't buy those expensive frames. I buy the ones he has in another show case that are just slightly out of date and there is no warranty and they are very cheap in comparison. When I consider how tiny the metal is on the sides and around the glass, I'm amazed at the stress they take from daily use.

I agree with you. Not a joke and not funny. You need to go visit Margaret and Helen (http://margaretandhelen.wordpress.com/). It'll make you feel better about what folks have to say abour our dear President. Teabonics on flickr will give you a giggle too.

First I need to say that I love your cow posts. I'm actually thinking of adopting the cow principle :)
Second: I do sooo agree with todays posts!!There are some fav blogs of mine that i do NOT visit anymore because of the adds. Hate those!!!
I'm a Pearl costumer too so got that one too and last but not least: wishing someone dead never ever is a joke and especially a US president. People should now better.
Long comment but thank you for being a cow :)

Ohhh....to live in a country where the clerk most affably extends the warranty!

The FB comment is so sad.

Me too on all counts. I don't think they are notified when you unfriend them though on FB. I am receiving hateful "pass along" jokes and cartoons about the same issues from a fellow guild member. She just assumes that I am of the same political persuasion that she is - which I am not. I plan on telling her face to face this Wed that she can stop sending them to me, and she should stop sending them at all. Thanks for the cow vent!
Don't mess with a Crsanky Old Woman.

Consider me a COW also. My last boss was sending me emails at work that were similiar to that FB 'joke'. I emailed him back and told him that we had different political views and I didn't appreciate his comments or so-called jokes.
ad's for things extra on blogs is sad really..........I have unsubscribed to some blogs because of that.........
and I know a few people have offered on there blog to do paid advertising....not welcome here.........

I hate the ads too!

When will civility come back? I believe that the more people use the Internet as a means of communication that interpersonal skills don't get developed and, as a result, rude and disrespectful behavior takes over. I dealt with this on our church council. Folks wrote e-mails to one another with content that they never would have used in a face to face meeting, I was shocked, but I guess I shouldn't have been. They acted as though the rules for manners and decorum didn't apply to cyber-communication. Sad!

Boy, I'm with you on the FB issue. I just unfriended three people who posted the same "Favorite" post you mention. I just will NOT put up with that kind of hateful attitude. Period.
I didn't know why some of the blogs were shortened, so you had to click to read their blogs. It is a pain, especially when there 78 to read and catch up on.
I am in agreement on all you said. But I did purchase some amazing frames, the bendy kind. I love them.
Sorry for your "down" day, but it is GOOD to vent.
I learned some things today from your post.

I don't care what your political affiliation is, that post was just wrong. Interestingly enough, NJ Teachers' Union officials had to apologize for posting a similar "prayer", with Governor Christie as the target instead of President Obama. Here is a CNN article that addresses the proliferation of these "prayers": http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/04/21/obama.facebook.prayer/index.html

Not funny, not humorous, not remotely intelligent.

On a different note: I AM planning to put an ad on my blog, however. It will be for when Nancy goes into business selling official COW shirts.

i love the cows and have since the first day you started them! I think those ads are just plain terrible and have read on many blogs they don't even make very much money off them in the first place....can't understand it.

fb has become a place of odd feelings lately. and yes grown women act a bit ridiculous on there, so do young women and of course all sorts of men....

moo on!!

AMEN to all you have just stated. That is one of the most horrendous prayers I have ever encountered. I hope that the FBI finds the person that started that one.

Good for you about unfriending the FB person. I just hid them because I got sick of their posts. I think I will go back and tell them that I don't like their posts and to stop sending them to me.

Thanks for speaking up.

Some bloggers make $40,000 a month blogging, want to bet those ads are the reason. On FB and unfriending, my cousin unfriended Facebook !! and I sure am NOT going to ask her why.
