"And through the open window, she hands Charlie a sandwich . . . "

Last Friday morning we drove north to do something we've wanted for many years.  Ever since we'd seen a PBS documentary on Dale Chihuly, Joe and I have hoped to visit one of his installations.  They've been in places like Seattle and Venice and Tennessee, all pretty much out of our reach.  Finally there was one in Boston!  Very driveable from here.  And our dear friend Sharon lives just a short train ride outside of the city, so we had a place to stay and good company for our visit!

On Saturday morning we hopped aboard the MTA, humming the old familiar tune and hoping not to embarrass ourselves by bursting forth into song, and traveled to the Boston Museum of the Fine Arts.  The following is a sampling of what we viewed there.  It was everything we'd dreamed it would be!

Glad you're not like poor old Charlie and didn't get stuck on the MTA! I'm fortunate enough to live between Seattle and Tacoma, WA and have seen several Chihuly installations. They are indeed a wonder to behold.

Isn't Chihuly amazing? Our older son introduced us to his work when he took us to see an installation in Miami. When a colleague and I attended a convention in Pittsburgh a few years agon, I got to see another installation at the Phipps Conservatory. We spoke with one of the conservatory staff who told us that it took 11 boxcars to ship the pieces and that pieces may be reused to create new sculptures in another exhibit. Perhaps we can squeeze in a short trip to Boston this summer.

I absolutely love Chihuly! When the Winter Olympics were in Salt Lake City in 2002 they had several of his pieces on display. It was "other-worldly" to see them. I believe there is still a large one in Abravenel Hall in downtown Salt Lake--at least last time I went in there (a few years ago) it was there. I had the impression it was going to be permanent.
So happy for you that you got to do this!
Chihuly had an exhibition here at the Reading Museum a few years ago. I was fortunate to have also seen his work when I lived in Seattle. Amazing, just amazing.
with the "T" it's often love/hate but i was sooo much thinner taking the "T" every day! making me homesick

If you ever get out this way to the Pacific Northwest, you need to put this on your list: http://www.museumofglass.org/page.aspx?pid=448

Love, love, love Chihuly. The Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh has a few of his pieces, artfuly displayed in the foliage there. Our son went to Carnegie Mellon Univ, and we went to the Phipps several times since their displays are gorgeous.
Me too me too me too--Love Chihuly. PBS special hooked me and I hope to see the artwork someday live and in the “glass” as it were. Curves and swirls and abstract lion heads... inimitable !~!

I have seen so many raves about Dale Chihuly's art works that I've always hoped to get to see them in person. I got to do so recently when, on our return from a camping trip, we stopped in at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY.

There are two Chihuly pieces on display there (one right as you enter the museum) but also wonderful displays of art glass work by many other artists as well as historical glass pieces and glass blowing demonstrations too. It was a surprisingly interesting side stop for us that I would recommend to anyone traveling in northwest NY state.
