This and That

. . . Last evening some fellow quilters were talking about a new phenomenon that involves cutting fabric into strips or using purchased jelly rolls and sewing these strips together as quickly as one can and having an entire quilt top finished just like that! They didn't get it. Neither did I.

. . . I cleaned out my blog links recently, adding a couple, deleting one who hadn't blogged in months and months and also one who was sharing photographs of her uncovered pregnant belly each month. I just didn't need to see that.

. . . I know there are people who go to thrift shops and buy shirts and cut them up to make quilts. Some of these people have a nice sized fabric stash.  This is something I do not understand.

. . . There's something about the "Occupy" movement that feels sentimental, like back to the 60s and 70s where many people felt more strongly about social issues than accumulating things.  I'm not involved in the Occupy movement, but I admire those who are for taking a stand about something that matters to them.

. . . I'm not really sure who Kim Kardashian is or why her marrying and divorcing is of such interest.  But then, I never really knew who Anna Nicole was, and I somehow doubt we've heard the last of her.

. . . In those Cialis commercials with the two bathtubs on the beach, are they filled with sea water?  If not, how did they get filled?  Sitting side-by-side with my man in separate bathtubs on a beach is something I never dream about.

. . . Now, just because I don't want to make a high-speed strip quilt or cut up a stranger's shirts to make a quilt, that doesn't mean I think you shouldn't be able to do those things.  And if you know the full scoop on Kim and the other Kardashians, well, by golly, you know something I don't and more power to you.  If you want to post photos on your blog of your ever-expanding bare belly, stretch marks and all, by all means go ahead.  It's your blog.

And this is mine.

Oh, Nancy, thanks for the morning chuckle!!
Yes, I cut up thrift store shirts, because I love plaids and there is always a dearth of them in quilt shops around here. Thrift stores are replete with good quality plaid fabrics in a variety of colors, in the form of men's shirts. I'll take my plaids however I can get them.
As far as any of the other stuff you mentioned goes--I'm with you!!

There are SO many commercials on TV that I just shake my head over ... those bathtubs are one of them!

I do like to see progress when I'm working, but it is NOT all about speed for me, either.

Hugs to you for speaking your mind.

Those cialis commercials always crack me up -- what is it with those bathtubs? is that some sort of secret code for "great sex" that I've just never been privy to? why bathtubs? oh well...

As the French say "Chacun a son gout" -- Each to his [her] own). Still, I confess I'm mystified by several of the same things you are.

However, IMNSHO, quilting is about creating (no matter where you get your "ingredients") not racing.

Enjoyed the "tweet" from George Takei, quoted by Chez:

"KK files for divorce after 72 days. Another example of how same-sex marriage is destroying the very institution."

'Nuff said.

I got a kick out of your blog today. ;-) It reminds me of an Andy Rooney monologue.
By the way, I do cut up shirts from the thrift shops, but I know that is not for everyone.
And, you are absolutely right. This is your blog, so you can write whatever you want. I like it.

Tried one of the jelly roll race tops, also called a Jelly Roll 1600by those (like me) who are not racing, but rather trying something new and different. It turned out surprisingly well, and will be a colorfulful note to my nephew's monotone livingroom. Liked it so much that I tried a second, with disasterous results. Now I'll try something new and different with that & see if cutting/reassembling will make it look better. I may not understand (or like) bathtubs on the beach or celebrity bozos, but I'm always up for an adventure.

I've made one of those jelly roll quilts and I still don't get it. In my defense, I signed up for a guild workshop before I saw the project. When I saw it, I was less than enthusiastic, but I had already committed to giving a ride to another member who rarely gets to go to workshops. During the evening, the "teacher" (not much teaching needed for this project) who is also a local quilt store owner offered another jelly roll as a prize to the person who finished first. I knew that wasn't going to be me, so I sewed along at a steady pace and got most of the strips sewn together by the end of the night. However, I needed to rip out an entire row and reposition a section as the light strips of the roll got clumped together. I wasn't the only person that happened to. I like a little more challenge and creativity in my quilt making and I probably will never make another quilt using this method.

Thanks for the chuckle about some of the othe things!

I am with you ALL the way and have enjoyed today's reminder that I am not the only one who wonders?

I like the way you think! Thank you for letting those thoughts float through the Blogosphere--they give the rest of us something(s) to think about! And by the way, I had trouble posting a comment on your last post on the DNA quilt. I love it, and hope you don't mind that I add it to my "someday" list.

Ha Ha Ha! You are so funny! I agree totally with everything you just said. Also, I rank jelly roll quilting right up there with charm packs. I just tried my first (and last) quilt using 5 inch squares from a charm pack. I found not all the squares were square and not all were exactly 5 inches. Very frustrating!

I enjoyed your post today!!
There are times when I need to get a project finished ASAP but I still need to make something I love and I need to enjoy the process. Most of the time it's fun to savor the process..in my opinion.
I don't cut up thrift shop shirts for quilts, but I do pick up vintage pyrex because it makes me smile, it was made in either Canada or the USA and my daughters all want some too.
and yes it's YOUR blog so you get to run the show!! Just like I get to run mine :)
Have a great day!!

Great post! I have not revved my engine to begin a jelly roll race, I wouldn't know how to behave if I finished a quilt top "just like that", it's a passing fad. As for all the other pop culture observations I am often left on the sidelines, I don't keep up. Have I missed anything? No. :)

Loved your comments today. I have had a lot of the same feelings.

Oops, I may be the absent blogger. Funny how time slips by. I discovered my next post would be number 100 and got stuck trying to figure out a give away.

Great comments. Had some friends do that jelly roll thing. The only one I liked was done with batiks and had a watercolor look to it. I'd end up switching up colors, I'm afraid. Agree with the Occupy comment and the Kardashians comment - what is with this being famous for being on TV a lot business? Never thrifted fabric but can understand why some do. Finally, I thought I was the only one who didn't get the bathtubs! Thanks for the chuckle
