Neighborhood News I Couldn't Make Up if I Tried

After lunch today, Joe reported that our next-door neighbor's front door glass was broken. She's away visiting family on the west coast, so through a combination of texts and phone calls, she was brought up to speed. She decided to let the police know and Joe told her to have them contact him. And we settled down to wait.

Soon our doorbell rang, and it was the woman from the far end of the block coming to tell us “the Police are next-door!” Out Joe went (without Lizzy, to her chagrin), to find two patrolmen and a sergeant with their three police cars. Before long, their number had increased to five police cars and additional personnel including a lieutenant (right now I’m wishing we lived in England because I’ve always thought “leftenant” had a terrific sound, but I digress). All of them were wearing bullet-proof vests and were adorned with peace-keeping equippment. Soon across the street came Derek, barefoot in his haste, followed by Mr. Nonspeaker carrying his dog leash but without his dog.

The police officer was of the opinion that (a) the bottom part of the door had been KICKED in and (b) that perhaps it happened last night following the football game when kids were making their way home.

Joe commented to the multiple law enforcement personnel that it must be a slow day Near Philadelphia for that many of them to have shown up and with that their beeper went off and so did they.

Joe has gone over to clean up the broken glass.

The most excitement we’ve had in this neighborhood since Andrea’s smoke detector went off eight years ago.

As to the football game, last night Joe and Lizzy went out for a walk after dark; they went to the lower fields behind the stadium and on the way back were kind of peeking in to see if they could see the marching band. And all at once the band began to play and Lizzy didn’t care for it and being off her leash, she took off. I knew nothing of this until my doorbell rang and when I got there it was a man with HIS leashed dog wanting to tell me that Lizzy was loose in the yard and Joe wasn’t to be seen. So I went out and got Lizzy to come in and then the man said he saw Joe coming up the street (apparently the two of them know each other from dog-walking). I was glad Lizzy knew enough to come home and now we know that marching band music isn’t to her taste.

I thought all of THAT was the excitement of the weekend. Little did I know.

Tomorrow is the almost-annual polka mass at our church. I’m going to pass.

What can I say? The world is sometimes a very interesting place. However you are clearly in the right place, as your neighbors seem to care for all of you.
