Merricks Nth, Month One, Post Three

So, there were three elements to Month One of Merricks: the applique circles, the large diamonds, and the small diamonds. I'd dreaded the circles and felt pretty confident about the diamonds.

Boy was I wrong!

The large diamonds were easy and I did them by machine. They were featured in my last post.

The applique circles were no trouble at all! I got to feeling pretty good about my applique by the time they were finished. It's a good thing because Month Two (yes, I did finish Month One before opening!) has a large applique component and I've already cut 32 orange peels and marked their background squares. Stay tuned.

But, oh! those small diamonds! I struggled and struggled with them as I hand pieced, having just a terrible time getting my 1/4" right and the sides even and the tops and bottoms with the points not truncated. They're done. They're not perfect; they're not gorgeous. But they're done!

Those small diamonds were a struggle for me too. Now I am contemplating how to stitch the orange peels. That is a block that has given me much trouble over the years. Any tips?

Congrats on mastering the circles and small diamonds and wishing you and everyone making this quilt well on the orange peels.

Hugs!
