I'm a Winner!

Speaking of Julie, which I did a couple of days ago, she recently finished a great-looking string quilt and decided to give away her left-over strings. Guess who won! Yes! Me! This nice squarish box arrived with two bags of goodies -- one sort of summery colors and one sort of spring or autumn colors. I've not made a string project before. Now I have no excuse!

Just took a class on string piecing with Bonnie Hunter at Quilt Odyssey. We paper pieced the strings and trimmed the blocks down. Nothing too hard about it. One hint Bonnie gave is that once you have used part of a string, it doesn't go back in the pile. Just put the string on your leg and keep piecing with those stings until they are used up. You probably already know that she has a free pattern for a string quilt on her website.

Don't forget that you can use string blocks in other ways too! I sewed some string blocks at Quiltapalooza, then made them into HST. Posted several possible layouts on my FB page, and have settled on a variation of the zig-zag setting. Since all my strings have a common color scheme -- and I still have strings left -- I'm now piecing a border! Have fun!

Strings can be paper pieced (but you have to tear off the paper) or foundation pieced (using lightweight fabric that remains in the quilt) or free-form pieced without backing (prolly not the best plan for a first project - but definitely a fun way to go). Brenda's String Blog is an awesome source for eye candy, inspiration, and information!!

Bonnie Hunter has OODLES of free patterns for string pieced quilts. You will never run out! I personally will have to live to be in my 100s to have to use up all her patterns :D

Deanna at Wedding Dress Blue blog also has a great pattern - String Twist - that I have made a couple quilts from that is super for using up random fabrics.
