Mortified, Near Philadelphia

For a few months I've been saying things like, "It must be hard to be a Republican these days." And it must. Friends of mine from "the other side" have been quiet about political matters for quite a while, practically from the time we first heard the name "Sarah Palin."

But Republicanism isn't what I'm concerned about today.

It's another situation. A horrible, shameful situation taking place not all that far from where I live. According to CNN and Huffpo and I suppose nearly all other media, a day camp located in Northeast Philadelphia contracted with a private swim club to have a place for the kids to cool off on the hot summer days. And apparently the first day they came to swim, the children were told to get out of the pool and the camp's money was refunded. There were comments like "What are those black kids doing here?" and a club member was quoted as saying that she worried that the campers "might do something" to her child.

You can read the story here if you haven't already heard all about it.

The Valley Club is located about a fifteen-minute drive from where I live.

It's hard to be Near Philadelphia right now. Of course, Huntingdon Valley is a pretty much all white community, and on the uppity side. But still.

What must those campers be feeling like?

And, just as important, what are the Valley Club members' children learning?

You know, this makes me want to cry. It truly breaks my heart. We are all Gods children and I will set my heart & mind to cover Near Philadelphia in prayer.

This is shameful, my heart and mind simply cannot believe this is going on. What a disgrace.
I saw this news story on Channel 6 this morning and was appalled, however, not shocked. When will people stopped being judged by the color of their skin or religious affiliation? I cried when I saw that dear young man with tears on his face talking about what he overheard pool members saying. No one should be treated in that manner, especially a child.

I have been hearing it on the news, and I am hurting for the children! I can't help but think the parents of the *other* children have set the pattern with their attitude and example directed at the club children! Very sad indeed, God must be shaking his head in the knowledge about the shallow thinking of *the people*!

My prayers that it can be resolved, but in the meantime, the children hurt! My grandson did a summer in the Inner city Philly, and his heart hurt for the children, they are the victims! The last day as the InterVarsity group packed up to leave for the start of classes a little four year old boy, knocked on the door and asked "Joey will you play ball with me just one more time before you leave" it left a mark on Joe's heart, he now has his degree in Sociology/Psychology from the university.

I know my answer is long, but I am feeling the hurt for the children that JUST WANTED TO COOL OFF!!

oh dear! the parents of those children are certainly not setting the best of examples - until the cycle is broken it will go on and these kids will grow up with the same attitudes of their parents... and so it will go..very sad!

I just saw this on the news. It broke my heart.

These days, at least, the kids can know that the problem is with the adults and not with them, though I'm sure comments can hurt.

Just when I begin to think that things might be improving, something like this happens to show that we still have a long way to go. I saw the interviews with some of the children and I was saddened that they were confronted with such raw blatant prejudice at a time when they should have been having fun.

All that the people who pulled out their own children from the pool and made these comments have succeeded in doing is showing their own true bigotted colours - shame on them - and good on you Nancy for highlighting this here today - I'm sad to say I son't think this attitude is exclusive to this Philadelphian suburb - we occasionally see it on this side of the pond too, even in quiet leafy (but predominantly white) Somerset

Can there really be that many ignorant members of one swim club? I was appalled when I heard this last night on the news. So sad....

Good heavenly days! I can't imagine being a child and...I probably won't be praying for their (the bigots, not the kids) death (probably) but perhaps I can pray for a locust or frog plague to fall on their thick heads? Good thing God loves them, cuz I sure have a hard time with it.

Republicans are regrouping to get back to their roots of conservatism. Sarah Palin shook the political arena with her stature & stance in morals, life & politics. About time someone has got the attention of reality out there.

Well, racism is here, it has always been here, & actually it is worse than ever ... as are white supremacy groups, etc.

It is so sad that this situation happened regardless of uppity snippity or not areas ... it just simply shows the mentality of the people that are involved. The press is barely touching this subject other than FOX NEWS who is about the only reliable news cast left on this earth.

God made us all for a purpose ... we are His children ... we are all one.

Pray for these fools that are setting horrible examples to their children & the nation that they be
struck silent ... it is heart bresking. No one, adult or child, should be exposed to this idiotic bigotry. Cold, cruel, mean people ....

I am the proud blessed 'Mini' of 2 adorable highly intelligent racially mixed children. I wouldn't trade them for all the gold on this living earth. You wouldn't either if you had the chance to meet them. Come over to my blog & meet them ...

I read about this in the paper and I could not believe that this sort of thing could happen in this century in a Northeastern state. How awful for those little kids to experience - or for anyone to experience, being publicly humiliated. I hope that club is publicly censured. Jerks!

As I said on Facebook, shame, shame, shame. I can't believe this could happen so blatantly.

I don't know why I'm surprised, though. Even in liberal, tolerant Santa Rosa, I saw an soccer mom in an SUV with an "88" decal on the back window (stands for the 8th letter of the alphabet--h--and heil hitler).

Join the Southern Poverty Law Center and you'll get an education, even though you might be appalled by it. Keep those children in your prayers, all of them, they are the future of race relations in this country and they all learned some terrible lessons that day.

And so another generation learns to hate. It is appalling, infuriating and pathetic. We keep thinking that one day we will get past the bigotry and hate, but will we? Those uppity parents should be so ashamed of themselves.

I hate to see any child hurt, whatever the circumstances. But...why do you have to put a negative comment about Republicans in the same blog entry, as if Republicans are somehow connected to this incident?? By your disparaging comments about Republicans, in this and other blog entries, you are labeling and stereotyping a whole group of people. Oh well, I guess you really only want Democrats to read your blog. I won't be back. Louise
