Irene: The Morning After The Night Before

Well, the storm of the century decade news cycle* has come and gone, leaving our little section Near Philadelphia pretty much intact.

In no way minimizing those who had real damage or threat to life, I can write only of my experience.  It is still slightly windy and there is a very light rain still falling.  And there are some fallen branches.  We have perhaps a couple more hours of this.

Our basement is dry, thanks to a major investment we made several years ago, and no trees or wires are down as far as I can see.

Church, however, has been cancelled for today.  So it looks as though I face a brief period of pick-up sticks and then can return to Bernina!

Thanks to all who expressed concern for us.

We are intact as well. Must have had a brief electrical outage though because clocks ar blinking and my computer restarted. We'll venture out a little later to see how the roads are -- the biggest concern is the Sandy Run, which tends to flod and block access on Twining Road. It will be interesting to see what's up with transportation into Philly tomorrow.

It will indeed be a Bernina Day, Nancy. I think we will also get around to watching The Conspiritors.

Whew! Glad you have survived without damages. My nephew and family near Mullica Hill, NJ have no power and a flooded basement but as far as we know, no other damage.

Great to read it all fizzled. I much prefer that outcome. Hurricanes are brutal from my perspective and I'm always grateful when they turn out to be a non-news event.

Glad to hear you weathered the storm well. We still have some rain (less than 2 inches) and some wind, but nothing major...especially compared to the coastal areas!

Glad you were relatively unscathed. Wish all had been so lucky.

Nancy, Glad you're okay. Down in Columbia, MD, we are as well. We kept our power and all the large trees in our yard. Much to clean up.

I'm glad you're okay. I've been hearing about major flooding & hopefully people will be safe & able to resume their lives again.
Many thanks to the brave & competent first-responders.

I lost power at midnight and it wasn't retored until an hour ago. There's some water in my (unfinished) basement, as there is with any torrential rain, but more than usual. Fortunately, everything is raised slightly off the concrete, since I know about the problem. Sewing was out today, given the lack of power and/or light to see handwork. But I got a lot of papers sorted and pitched! Can't imagine being sans electricity for weeks, as is predicted for some!

Maybe the hype seems excessive in retrospect, but weather prediction is not an exact science and I'd rather take extra steps to avoid serious problems than see people and property damaged because a storm wasn't taken seriously. YMMV, of course.

Thanks for the update, I stopped by just to make sure you were doing well. Sounds like a good day to stay in and sew, good thing you didn't lose power!

I am so glad to read of minimal damage there, I've seen news coverage of areas near Philadelphia that were under water or nearly so. Have a great week! ;)

Glad to hear you are okay. We had pretty much the same situation in NH - I've gone thru nor'easters that were worse. Some beautiful old trees came down and we'll probably have flooding because our rivers and streams were high for this time of year, but given what they thought might happen and how bad it was along the NC coast, we were lucky.
