Field Trip to Beth Sholom

This morning Cathy and Emily and I went on a long-anticipated tour of Beth Sholom Synagogue in Elkins Park, not far at all from Philadelphia. We'd initially had reservations two weeks ago, but wussed out at the forecast of snow (that never really came). Today there was a slightly less threatening forecast and we decided to go for it.

It wasn't very expensive, and was so worth it!

The synagogue was built in 1959 and I have faint recollection of that.

A joint project of Rabbi Mortimer J. Cohen and Frank Lloyd Wright (yes, that FLW), it is gorgeous. We had an excellent guide, Helene, who explained the history of the building, emphasizing the special relationship between Mr. Wright and Rabbi Cohen, and showed us everything. I hadn't realized that tours were available; otherwise, I would have done this long ago.

On the way home, we planned our next outing together!
