Tulips and Windmills: Montmartre

On our first full day in Paris, it was May 1, a holiday, and crowds were abundant. We also saw people carrying traditional small packets of Lily of the Valley. We decided that a visit to Montmartre was in order and after some complicated maneuvering on the Metro, followed by some climbing, we found ourselves at the queue for the funicular to the top.

The line to visit Sacre Coeur was like a snake, back and forth, back and forth, and there was a problem near the entrance to the church with line cutters who apparently thought themselves too important to wait their turn.

Inside, the church was beautiful; I think it may be my favorite European church that we've visited (and if you've followed this blog for very long, you know that we have visited quite a few). I was happy to sit and think and reflect while Joe wandered around.

The funicular returned us to a kind of central area where we found a nice place for lunch.

We partook of crepes more than once!

Throughout our entire trip, I enjoyed Sicilian lemonade.
