Schnibble Mania Strikes Near Philadelphia!

Well, you might ask, what have we here?  Has the woman gone bezique for Schnibbles?  Well, more than one woman has had a serious case of Schnibbles over the past couple of years, judging from the blogs.  But not me.  I've never made one.  Never even bought a pattern.  I just don't have a lot of call for mini-quilts or for wall hangings.

But, y'know, neither am I one for not exploring a popular fad -- one never knows how it will turn out.  I'm so enjoying my Summer Hours at work and the sewing time it affords me at home.  And I decided that this summer I would try some new things.  By gum, I'm going to attempt freezer paper applique.  And going to paper piece at least one block.  And make a Schnibble.

Not knowing really where to start with this last, I put out a call to the White Oak crowd to see if anyone had a Schnibble pattern she would lend me.  Pat -- yup, that Pat -- showed up on Saturday night with this vast assortment for me to choose among.  And she alleges that these are just some of her vast Schnibblerabilia.  I've picked out one to start with.

And next weekend I'm going to be visiting a different quilt shop, one I've never been to, and on my shopping list is a charm pack or two and the additional fabric needed for my belated foray into Schnibbleville.  If you are a Schnibbler, leave me a comment telling me what you like about 'em.  And if you do not Schnibble, by gosh, leave me a comment telling me why!  And I'll draw a number on Wednesday and pick up a charm pack for you, too, so we can Schnibble on together later in the month.

ADDENDUM on Wednesday, July 6, 2011:  I had said I would draw a number today, but have decided to wait until Saturday for very good reason to be revealed in due time.  Comments are now closed for this post.  Thanks to the many people who entered.

I've never Schnibbled. I just never saw the appeal. Then again, my tastes do tend to run toward sampler quilts.

I've never gotten into Schnibbling but would love to give it a try!

Okay, maybe this is a stupid question, but what is a Schnibble?

I have made one Schnibble, I use it as a table topper. Had fun making it and will probably make more. Variety is always nice. There are seasonal fabrics and fun novelties that can be used.
Have fun Nancy.

Thanks, Nancy, I was afraid to ask, thinking all know but me--again !~! Life can be like that :)

I have done a couple of schnibbles. Since I have no real need for a samll quiltlette, I use them on backs of quilts-using leftover fabric from the quilt top.

I've got the book and intend to do one--they're nice designs. I have many of her other books too--I'm a big fan of Carrie Nelson's designs; she does traditional in a very contemporary way. I love the way she puts colors together and tweaks traditional blocks and such. Even if I never make a pattern of hers, she's great inspiration. Be sure to read the introduction chapters to the Schnibbles book--she's got a great sense of humor. It's the first time I ever bothered to sit and read the whole "basic quiltmaking instructions" section--she made it very entertaining!

I've schnibbled a couple of times... I think the designs are cute, but the quilts seem to me to be a little too small for baby/kid quilts and too "cute" for wall quilts. Maybe I've just picked the wrong ones or the wrong fabrics. I will watch anxiously to see what you come up with!

I have the pattern, I have the fabric - now I have to get the courage to try to machine piece! (oh, right, I have the machine! LOL)

I'm one of "those". What is a schibble?
I have never Schnibbled but I do have the Schnibble Times Two book. I like my quilts BIG!

Welcome aboard! I have a number of her patterns. What I like so much about them is you can try something new without a huge investment of time or money. The quilts go together quickly and make cute wall hangings and table toppers.

Good luck with your first one. Which pattern did you choose?

I don't Schnibble because I have way too many projects already! But I can always be convinced to start...Thanks for the chance!
I've got a large assortment of patterns, and the book. I plan to buy the next book as soon as it is released. BUT...I've never made one yet. I guess I think I'll have more time 'later'--whenever later gets here!

I have the Schnibbles book and just finished two of the smaller designs as baby quilts for my twin grandsons due in September. They were a little small for baby quilts but were very easy to enlarge to a good size. The directions were easy to follow and using charm squares allowed me to use a wide range of fabrics without having to buy more than what I needed. I will definitely make more Schnibble designs!

I have Schnibbled a lot and that girl, "Cindy Lou Who," is my absolute favorite!! I have lots of Miss Rosie's Quilt Co. patterns and love her style--large or small!! Go ahead and give one a try! You won't be sorry! Jan

I have the Schnibble Times Two book, but haven't made any tops from it just yet. But, I've made the State Fair quilt and thought it was easy and turned out well....So I'd like to try another one. Thanks for this opportunity!

I love the controlled, scrappy look of Schnibbles... and own quite a few of the patterns, but haven't made one yet. (Love Carrie's running commentary throughout the patterns too)

I just finished piecing my first Schnibble (and it's also my first quilt), and I've loved every minute of it. I'm now totally hooked!

I've never made a Schnibble quilt, but do have a few of Carrie Nelson's "non-schnibble" books. I would like to try one, though. I love anything scrappy.

I've never Schnibbled, but then, I don't really buy or follow patterns. I like to work it out for myself.

I haven't Schnibbled yet either, but one of these days would like to give it a try. I think they would make great table toppers!

I've never schnibbled but I do have that book. I just don't know what I'd do with a little Schnibble quilt since I tend to make quilts big enough for the couch or a bed, usually queen size at that.

I haven't schnibbled yet ,have a pattern and one of these days would like to try. Probably would use it as a table topper

Schnibble. I have seen this strange word and thought What? and carried on with another Large scrappy shirt quilt. But I am running out of beds to put them on and so are the relatives and friends (Linus quilts excepted). So small quilts, aka schnibbles, must be the way forward me thinks.

I, too, have never Schnibbled...maybe because I don't have a table to put a lovely topper on, probably because I've never seen a Schnibble (either made or the pattern) in real life - if I had I'm sure I'd have succumbed by now! (Also, my LQS doesn't sell charm packs or layer cakes so there's even less temptation!) I hope you enjoy your adventure in Schnibbleville - I may even join you one day!
P.S. Thanks for the giveaway - I'm in the UK - if you don't want to post overseas then please donate my chance!

I have seen them incorporated into a back of a larger quilt. It looks great seems like a fun way to try something new and use up some scraps from the larger quilt. I have plans to try this.

I love all of Miss Rosie's patterns, so, of course, gave Schnibbles a try. It's a great way to see if you want to make the same quilt in bigger pieces and they are fairly quickly made --- not always a bad thing!

Sorry, but I had to trash that last post. Somehow a whole sentence got deleted...

This is Pat -- yep, THAT Pat. I like Schnibbles, but I'm not over-the-top wild & crazy about them. For those of you who don't know, a "schnibble" means a little piece of something, kind of like the word "schnitzel" in German. Schnibble patterns, created by Miss Rosie's Quilt Compoany, are for small quilts, usually 33" square, and use charm packs (you can use you own scraps if wish, but the 5" precuts just make it easier). Most require 2-3 charm packs, plus backgroud, backing and binding fabric.

I went through a phase where I made myself project packs of Schnibbles, pre-cutting all the fabric I'd need, and putting everything in a large zip-lock along with the pattern. I've been using them as a diversion -- something different, something quick -- when I go on a quilt day or a retreat, or when my brain just needs a rest. Done in seasonal colors, they make great table-toppers. I'll probably make a Halloween one for my DIL. I made one for my daughter, and she has it hanging in her kitchen -- it filled up a large blank wall & picks up her happy colors well. I am probably going to take one of the last of the project packs and rearrange the blocks to make a rectangular table runner rather than the suggested square.

They are fun, and they provide somewhat instant gratification. Using charm packs allows you to get a scrappy, yet coordinated look without a big investment. They are also the perfect size to machine quilt.

I really like the Schnibbles. They go together quickly and can be expanded if you would like a bigger quilt. So far I have made 3and plan to make "State Fair" next. Hope you enjoy the experience.

HI Nancy, The first Schnibble I made was "Lincoln". I made it in May (i think). It was super easy and I enjoyed the floating stars in it-no worries about chopping off points! I just made Madeline. Before that I was just a Schnibble pattern collector! I don't know why I'm drawn to them, perhaps it's the ease of picking up a few charm packs and not thinking about fabrics so much and the patterns are 'updated classics'(?)

I have quite a collection of Schnibbles patterns and the charm packs to use for them. Now I just need to find the time to make them all.

A year or so ago, I had never heard of a Schnibble - and now I have made at least six! I like that I get get a fix of a fabric line I love for just a few $$$ with some charm packs. The problem is what to do with them all - LOL! Welcome to the land of Schnibbles!

I must confess that I was schnibbled challenged, too. But thanks to you and THAT Pat, I'm beginning to understand. I like the idea of something small and easy to complete inbetween bigger projects. Oh dear, another excuse to visit the quilt store! :-)

I just made three Schnibbles for my newest grandchild--i think they're a sweet size for newborns, and easily manageable for utility quilting with perle cotton. I never make full-sized quilts with a coordinated fabric line, so the Schnibbles are an enjoyable way to try out some fabrics I normally wouldn't use.

I've made several Schnibbles, the latest one was a recently released pattern called, "Recess" and I made it with Sunkissed fabric. It turned out really cute with summery colors. I've got both the Schnibbles books, not saying I'm a groupy, but I do like most of them! Thanks!

Hi Nancy-
I have never made a schnibble! Why? well, I guess I never knew there might me something missing in my life - like schnibbling. I am curious to learn how schnibbling may change your life and will stay tuned for your updates.

I love Schnibbles! They don't take a tremendous amount of time, I get to use some of the charm packs I love so much, and they're fun to have here and there in my house. I also love Carrie Nelson's non-Schnibbles patterns. If you haven't seen them, you should check them out.

Please tell me the name of the book(s) that are used for Schnibbles so we can look for them in our area. Sounds like fun especially for small table tops. Your CA cuz

I was like you, "what do I need with mini quilts", well I have made 3 Shnibbles, but I customized them to fit a need. Two i super sized, one is a nice size to lay in the middle of my bed, one is a lap size and the 3rd Schnibble I made exactly as the pattern, but used it as a medallion, and surrounded it with blocks for a kingsize quilt.

So I guess the thing I like about Schnibbles is how easy they are to change or customize, to make them your own little something something. I'll be eager to see which one you selected for your first one!

Welcome to the club!

Now I've learned something new. I love the look and the idea of these schnibbles. I've made doll quilts and monster size bed quilts, but never one that size. Will have to add it to my wishlist.

I have been making Schnibbles for several years now and love them. I use them for table toppers and also sometimes expand on the pattern and make wallhangings with seasonal fabrics to hang in my living room. Instant gratification. Great way to use some of those scraps too!
